Welcome to your guide on the best practices for search engine optimization (SEO). We will be covering how you can optimize the use of images.

Image-related information can be provided for by using the “alt” attribute

The way images are displayed on your website can have a significant impact on the way users view your site and search engines display your site in search results. Optimizing images requires assigning a distinct filename and “alt” attribute, which lets you designate alternate text if it is not displayed correctly for the image.

This attribute is important in that it allows users to gain information about the image even if they are unable to view it due to browser issues or a screen reader technology that won’t display an image correctly.

While text links should be your primary method of linking with regard to site navigation, the “alt” attribute is also helpful when you choose to use an image as a link. In that case, the alt text acts as an anchor text for your link.

Optimized image filenames and alt text is important with regard to Google Image Search. The more optimized your image, the easier Search can find and understand the images on your website.

Store files in specialized directories and manage them using common file formats

To simplify access to your images, consolidate them into a single directory instead of spread out across your domain.

Use file types that are familiar and supported across most browsers. JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP image formats are widely used and should make your files viewable across most platforms. Also consider matching your file type with the extension of your filename.

Optimizing images on your site will boost your user experience and search engine ranking.

  • Use brief, but descriptive filenames and alt text
Use short and description filenames and alt text on your webpage for full optimization effects.
  • Avoid:
  • Using vague or generic filenames such as “pic.gif” and “image1.jpg”. If you have too many images to name individually, consider using an automation program to name each one.
  • Making your filenames too long.
  • Copying and pasting full sentences into alt text or filling it with too many keywords

  • Supply alt text when using images as links
Consider writing alt text for an image if you choose to use it as a link. This will allow Google to recognize it better and gather more information about the linked page.

    • Avoid:
      • Spamming your alt text with long phrases or sentences
      • Using too many image links as part of the navigation on your website. Stick with text links for the majority of your navigation needs.
    • Supply an Image Sitemap file
Creating an Image Sitemap will give Googlebot the information it requires to understand your site better. Structured in the same way as an XML Sitemap file, an Image Sitemap is an important part of site navigation.
