Local SEO and Ranking Factors

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in local markets is becoming more difficult.  Google now only lists three choices in local packs, as opposed to the seven previously.  If you want your local Ottawa SEO to be effective, you will need to be sure you are in that top three.

Local companies rely on SEOs to have their name included in the top listings during searches.  They offer the searcher a quick solution with a recognizable address.  This gives the local business a big step forward in becoming the choice for the product or service.  With the limit of three companies popping up in the search engine results page (SERP), it becomes inherently more critical to code correctly so that you are among the top choices.  There is an option for the user to continue to click for expanded results, but they need to realize that need to drill further.

Another limiting factor is the increasing use of AdWords, which are another Google initiative to allow product listing and video displays to appear when the user is searching for key words.  These pop ups can also affect the hits for local businesses versus larger enterprises.

Ranking factors include:

  • Competitive
  • Local packs
  • Localized organic
  • Negative
  • Overall

Search engines draw upon a number of signals to determine a site’s ranking in the search display.  So it is inherent on the local businesses to use all of the resources possible to be sure that their company is among those displayed and as close to the top as possible.
